In the thick of my second, and definitively more challenging, semester at Yale, I am becoming increasingly more aware of the temptation to run on autopilot—to exist in a sort of survival mode, doing what needs to be done without paying much attention to anything else. […] After a few weeks of trying not to fall into bad academic habits, I realized I had instead fallen into a detrimental lack of rest, release, and joy.

Growing up, whenever I heard someone pray these words, I’d typically think, good for them...but I could never pray those things sincerely.

I am a Christian.
I am a Yale student.
I am a woman.
Three identities that are not too hard to piece together, especially when you don't think too much about it. A smart Christian girl. You see those everywhere. No surprise.
But press the issue a little harder. Look a little closer, and you'll see that those identities don't really blend all so well--

If you were a tree, you would understand. If you were a tree, you would know what it is like to have roots. You would know what it is like to have a trunk. You would also know what it is like to have branches. And leaves. And fruit. As someone coming from somewhere extremely different, extremely strange, and extremely foreign, I have a vague idea of what it is like to be a tree.

The above verse is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. Matthew 4:18-20 is more than just another display of Jesus's (naturally) perfect play on words. It puts me in the moment - dehydrated and dirty, hopelessly waiting for fish that never come - standing beside Simon Peter and Andrew as Jesus calls to us. In an instant, our once laughable attempt at considering ourselves fishermen bears more meaning than we could have ever imagined. Yes, we are fishermen (albeit poor ones). However, if we drop everything and follow Jesus we can be great fishers of men. All we need is a little faith.

What does it mean to be a Christian at Yale?
Being a Christian at Yale means always relying on God’s grace and mercy to speak thoughtfully, act graciously, think critically, and love deeply, never losing sight of God’s plan for my life.
Being Christian at Yale, though, seems to not always align with what being a Christian should be.
Being Christian at Yale should be relying on God to guide every aspect of my life- you know, except those pesky post-grad plans. “I have to secure the bag, Jesus. You get it, right?”

Freshman year -- I stared at the first one with an offended grimace. Where was that thing from? Was there a pile of dung festering somewhere in my room?
Upon following it with my eyes, I soon discovered its source -- a half-finished cup of coffee left unattended for a mere few hours.
I soon learned that Yale gnats detected even the smallest hint of food and attacked every perishable drop in these dorms. This did not happen in my room back at home. I could leave dirty dishes from midnight snacks piling in my bedroom -- yes, guilty, I'm sorry -- and I would never encounter a fly, at least for a few weeks. A fly at home meant serious business and usually prompted a frantic search for its cause--which was usually something big, like a gallon of sour milk left in the sun in the living room. Something wild like that.
