A Taste for Transformation

Feb 5th, 2021 | By Raquel Sequeira TD ‘21+.5

The cover of Wired magazine’s March 2020 issue featured a scoop of fluorescent sherbet ice cream floating like a strange new planet amongst the stars. In the first month of the coronavirus pandemic, the piece zoomed out from earth: “Humans are headed for the cosmos, and we’re taking our appetites with us. What will fill the void when we leave Earth behind?”

Gumiho

Oct 4, 2020 | By Jason Lee TD ‘22.5

The only book I’ve ever stolen is a book of Korean myths. At the time, I’d only ever heard the versions my mother told me when I was younger. She’s a wonderful storyteller and invested much time and attention into ensuring I dreamt about the same characters she did. Dokkae-bis, dragon kings, tigers, a miserable fool of a frog— I loved folklore, and though they had to share space with Pokemon and Iron Giant, these characters became a consuming fixation.

What is Wonder

Sept 15, 2020 | By Kayla Bartsch GH ‘20

What is wonder but an apology?

Evidence of spirit flowing from soil,

a constant effulgence of that first

To Boldly Go…

Sept 15, 2020 | By Ben Colón-Emeric TD ‘22

But how does dramatic change come about? How can we rethink the systems that shape our lives? Imagine for a moment that you have infinite resources and total control over public policy. No longer must you decide if you’re going to trust your mother to cut your hair: the decisions you make can shape anything from world governance, to education, to the direction of scientific research. What future do you choose to build, and how do you get there? I, like many people, would be heavily influenced by the genre that has focused on the future for the better part of one-and-a-half centuries: science fiction.

Beholding Mystery:  Tintoretto’s Last Supper and Magnifying the Divine

Sept 14, 2020 | By Sharla Moody BK ‘22

Upon the first viewing, Tintoretto’s Last Supper is wholly disorienting. The painting is a conglomeration of people, color, and mystery grouped under a title that immediately ties it to da Vinci’s older, more famous depiction of the same event. But Tintoretto imagines a less formal, more enigmatic scene. Like da Vinci’s painting, Christ is still central, but the rest of the painting crowds in on all sides, overwhelming the eye and mind. There are angels! And a cat! And so many people!
