What is Biblical Joy?

One of the most perplexing yet ubiquitous terms I’ve encountered is “joy in Christ.” When trying to draw non-Christian friends closer to God, or while comforting a Christian friend through a difficult season, I found myself confused by what I meant with this term––and worse, struggling to attest to this feeling I was promulgating. Have I felt joy in Christ? What is it in the first place? What does my misunderstanding of it reflect about the state of my heart?

Why do we mourn? Has God not conquered death? Why do we fast? Has God not filled the hungry with good things? Why, when Christ has overcome the grave, when the morning stars sing together and all the sons and daughters of God shout for joy, do we sing a funeral dirge?
Witnessing Joy

In Isaiah 43, Yahweh instructs the people of Israel to serve as “witnesses” to the world that He alone is God. A few millennia later, the Jesus followers of today have inherited that same responsibility. I’ve walked with Jesus for several years, but it wasn’t until last spring that I began to actively explore what being a “witness” to God’s goodness and holiness could look like in my life.

Throughout the year, the Church follows the whole course of Jesus’ life from birth to ascension. We do so because we believe Christ’s life brings us life. If we stumble along in his footsteps, our lives will be changed for the better.
So, Lent is the time when Christians prepare for sharing in Jesus’ resurrection on Easter by first reliving his 40 days in the desert. We walk with him through his experience of deprivation and temptation in the wilderness (Luke 4:1–13; Matthew 4:1-11). .
Elevating Work, Prayer, and Potatoes

The painting The Angelus by Jean-François Millet depicts a man and a woman praying over their potatoes in the evening. The shaded silhouette contrasts the sun’s setting rays on the horizon. Over the man’s right shoulder, the sun engulfs the image, which draws the mind to something greater than the pitchfork and meager harvest, which represent the simple but inherently good livelihood of the pair.

Second drafts for our print publication are due Oct 31st, so this meeting will cover common problems in the first drafts, what to think about for the second draft, and some ideas on how to make the pieces talk to each other and flow.

Content Editing Workshop

For our print publication, we will be conducting content editing in person. At the Elm Institute, and guided by Peter Wicks, you will be paired with a partner and will each edit each other’s pieces for content and discuss what worked and what didn’t.

For our print publication, we will be conducting copy editing in person. You will be paired with a partner and will each edit each other’s pieces for grammar and punctuation, and polish off anything else needed in the draft.
